Dayi requested his trainer Sengcan, the Third Ancestor, “What’s the thoughts of the traditional Buddhas?” Sengcan stated, “What sort of thoughts do you will have now?” Dayi stated, “I’ve no thoughts.” Sengcan stated, “Since you don’t have any thoughts, why would you assume Buddhas have thoughts?” Dayi instantly ceased to have doubt.
Scholar: “I nonetheless don’t perceive. What’s the thoughts of the traditional Buddhas?”
Grasp: “It’s an identical to yours.”
Scholar: “Then, what’s the an identical thoughts like?”
Grasp: “Ask me once more.”
Scholar: “What’s the an identical thoughts like?”
Grasp: “I’m not deaf.”
