A talented musician and coder, the French American pianist Dan Tepfer builds pc programmes that work together together with his improvised compositions in manners each musical and visible. On this efficiency of ‘TriadSculpture’ from his multimedia venture Pure Machines (2018), which explores ‘the intersection, in music, between pure and mechanical processes’, Tepfer improvises on piano as visible representations of the chords he performs together with his left hand are generated on display. The result’s each a shocking audiovisual expertise and a small, curious glimpse into the usually hidden patterns and ratios that make music doable.
