Climate Notes

March did not do the lion-lamb factor this 12 months. February’s late gentle
temperatures continued into the primary week of March, then the chilly returned.
This final week has been extra spring-like and really welcome.

One commentary I needed to notate, was a small remoted pocket of frost on
March eleventh. I discovered it on the base of the hugelkultur, on the southwest edge.
Mapping the microclimates on one’s property is among the instruments of
permaculture. For instance, our backyard is protected and hotter than different
locations on the property. However I have not been very tuned into the subtleties of
microclimate on our place, so this tiny pocket of frost was a curiosity.

Backyard Tasks

Aisle mulching and soil prep continue
in anticipation of spring planting subsequent month. Yearly about this time, I
inform myself that subsequent fall, I will get all of my backyard beds
tucked in with a thick mulch of dried leaves. Then fall comes and I make a
begin. After which it rains and will get chilly, and I lose enthusiasm for outside
initiatives and do not end getting the whole lot mulched. So, when heat days
current themselves, the weeds all bounce into motion and benefit from the
naked soil. Then I’ve to de-weed them earlier than I can plant. You’d suppose I would
be taught.

By March, the naked soil backyard beds are coated
with weeds, however the
mulched beds develop only a few.

Dan began a base layer of rotted wooden.

Our first hugelkultur is that mound within the background.

Consuming

We’re not getting a lot from the backyard, so it is largely meals from the pantry.

I canned potatoes final 12 months. They make fast and attractive hash browns.

1st salad of the 12 months: chickweed, wild lettuce, dandelion and collard
greens,
hard-boiled egg, goat feta cheese, and my oil-preserved
cherry tomatoes.

You might recall that the oil-preserved cherry tomatoes have been an experiment
from
Preserving Food Without Freezing or Canning.

The jars sat in my pantry all winter, however with no winter backyard and no
winter greens, I kinda forgot about them till I made our first salad of the
12 months. They’re preserved in olive oil and vinegar, which makes a helpful
on the spot flavored salad dressing. I forgot to take a earlier than picture, however here is
what the jar seems like after consuming some.

The tomatoes wilted considerably, I believe as a result of salt.

It was a stunning addition to our salad! I’ll positively make greater than two
pints subsequent fall and work them into our winter food regimen with or with out salads.

Subsequent month can be planting month, and I am actually wanting ahead to that.
Anyone else?
