Beware the Nalujuit! A rare glimpse into a chilling Labrador Inuit tradition

In her quick documentary Nalujuk Night time, the Inuk filmmaker Jennie Williams takes viewers inside a practice celebrated by the Labrador Inuit communities of Canada every year on 6 January, or Outdated Christmas Day. Sharing some similarities with fashionable Halloween and Christmas celebrations, Nalujuk Night time entails older locals dressing in severely scary skeletal costumes as Nalujuit – otherworldly beings mentioned to emerge from the ocean ice every year to reward good behaviour with prizes and treats, and punish dangerous behaviour with chasing and (playful) hits with the enterprise finish of a workers. Shot in eerie black and white, Williams’s documentary gives outsiders a uncommon have a look at the thrills and chills of this distinctive ritual because it performs out locally of Nain.
