Q. Is there ever a point at which greater knowledge becomes detrimental to a person rather than beneficial? How about for society as a whole?

A. Information itself is impartial in essence. It may be neither detrimental nor helpful to both an individual or a society. Whether or not it’s dangerous or helpful will depend on how every of us sees it. That’s why it may be dangerous to some individuals and helpful to others on the similar time.

Nonetheless, for individuals who practise Zen meditation, the information of enlightenment is commonly considered an impediment in the best way of achieving enlightenment as a result of individuals are so deluded by mental understanding that they can not see what it factors to. So, historic masters would say that we must always look upon the Buddha’s and patriarchs’ phrases as enemies.
