Paul Woodruff, professor emeritus of philosophy on the College of Texas, Austin, has died.
Professor Woodruff was recognized for his work in historical philosophy, with specific consideration on virtues, the feelings, and politics, in addition to philosophy of theater and philosophy of training. His books embrace Living Toward Virtue: Practical Ethics in the Spirit of Socrates (2022), The Garden of Leaders: Revolutionizing Higher Education (2019), and Reverence: Renewing a Forgotten Virtue (2014), The Ajax Dilemma; Justice, Fairness and Rewards (2011), The Necessity of Theater: The Art of Watching and Being Watched (2008), and First Democracy; The Challenge of an Ancient Idea (2005). Along with his tutorial writing, Professor Woodruff wrote 4 books of poetry, a number of performs, and an opera libretto, in addition to a number of items for newspapers, together with The Washington Submit. A few of these later essays have been about his ideas on his impending demise.
Professor Woodruff began on the College of Texas, Austin, 50 years in the past, first as an assistant professor, and finally as chair of the Division of Philosophy, Director of the Honors Program, and Dean of Undergraduate Research. Previous to that, he was within the U.S. Military. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Princeton College, and undergraduate levels from Princeton and Oxford.
He died on Saturday of bronchiectasis.
