Final summer time, and once more this previous February, the administration of the College of Kent proposed slicing its philosophy program (see here). It has now determined to implement that proposal.
Simon Kirchin (Leeds, previously at Kent), shares information from the Kent Department of Philosophy:
Additional to earlier bulletins of plans, the College of Kent has determined to shut its Division of Philosophy. It is going to take no new college students any more. Current college students shall be ‘taught out’ throughout the subsequent two tutorial years. The College has made provision for a (very) small quantity of fte to hold out educating from 2024-2026.
As was famous in earlier posts, the choice was not based mostly on the poor efficiency of the Division or its philosophers:
This isn’t on the grounds of high quality: the philosophy division was ranked 3rd within the UK for total scholar satisfaction in the latest nationwide scholar survey, and 5th within the UK by way of GPA in the latest analysis evaluation (2nd for high quality of analysis outputs)
Philosophers at Kent “are actively in search of posts elsewhere.”
