The Birdsong Venture is an endeavour organised by the Audubon Society as a ‘celebration of the enjoyment and mysteries of birdsong’ by way of visible artwork, music and poetry. On this music video from the album For the Birds: The Birdsong Venture, Vol II (2022), the celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma is seen and heard performing ‘Within the Gale’, which he created in collaboration with the composer Anna Clyne. Maybe the one piece of music written ‘for cello and birdsong’, the efficiency sees Ma alone along with his instrument in a wooded panorama, performing the poignant work alongside a refrain of a few of nature’s most gifted singers.
