I’m again with one other anniversary journey recap! This one is all a few actually cool off the overwhelmed path hike we found in Acadia known as The Large Slide.

In case you missed the primary two recap posts, examine these out first:

Whereas we have been climbing Gorham Mountain, we struck up a dialog with a pair who have been out climbing with their 10 week outdated child.

We have been commenting how crowded The Beehive was, and so they shared with us that their favourite hike within the park was one known as The Large Slide, which was not on the official/important Acadia path map and due to this fact not as closely trafficked.

After doing some research into the hike, we determined to go for it a pair days later! We ended up being actually glad we did – it was such a cool hike!

The Giant Slide is a “lollipop” formed hike – not a full loop as a result of the primary and final half are an out and again, however there’s a pleasant loop within the center the place you’ll be able to hyperlink up with a bunch of the mountain summits – Sargent Mountain, Gilmore Peak, and Parkman Mountain.

To do the complete loop with all of the summits it’s 5.7 miles. In case you love rock scrambling, mountain streams, and summit views, you’ll love this hike.

The path begins on personal land within the forrest – a pleasant and mild begin. It had rained the day earlier than and the forrest was moist and comfortable, so all the things smelled superb.

The pines specifically have been so aromatic and recent; it was just like the world had simply had a shower.

This a part of the path was comparatively light, however there have been a whole lot of rocks and roots that required us to essentially regulate our ft.

There was additionally some moss and lichen round (and a few indicators round about not disturbing it). Very cool trying – I believe the sunshine inexperienced stuff beneath was moss.

After a short time we reached a lovely stream. The remainder of the Large Slide portion of the hike would now comply with the stream upwards.

Rock scrambling, right here we come!

Because it had rained the day earlier than, a whole lot of the autumn leaves have been on the bottom – it was actually fairly underfoot; so colourful.

The path started to take us up and up and up from this level on!

It was actually enjoyable – I like hikes the place nearly all of it’s rock scrambling. It’s very calming for me mentally and virtually meditative since it’s a must to be so targeted and within the second to ensure you don’t fall, continuously determining the place to place your ft and to carry on along with your fingers to tug your self up, and so on.

We have been mainly climbing proper alongside and across the stream!

Together with going via some large caves:

We had this a part of the hike completely to ourselves – we didn’t see anybody else on the market in any respect, which was good. It was so enjoyable in there and the sounds of the stream have been so calming.

After a whole lot of scrambling and climbing, we left the stream path and headed in direction of Sargent Mountain! We had a steep ascent after which the path instantly opened up.

We had a little bit of a break within the clouds for a second that gave us some good blue skies and fall leaf views!

We determined to take a break right here and eat our packed lunches that we had grabbed within the small grocery retailer in Southwest Harbor (close to our resort, The Claremont) that morning. It was really onerous to seek out someplace on the town to get a sandwich to go since most locations have been already closed for the season!

Matt grabbed a baguette, cheese, salami, and a few apples and carrots for us, and I made a decision on a hummus, veggie, and goat cheese sandwich. It was fairly yummy!

Fueled up, we carried on to the summit!

There have been just a few different folks round up right here who had come up a distinct approach. It was SO foggy as soon as we acquired there we mainly couldn’t see something – oh properly!

It was cool to have the ability to hit so many peaks in a brief timeframe!

From there, we took a short stint on a carriage highway to get again to the Large Slide Path. Isn’t this lovely? The views up there have been pretty with the October fall colours.

There have been a bunch of individuals out biking (principally e-bikes) on the carriage highway, which is certainly one thing on the listing for subsequent time.

After a brief stroll it was again into the woods!

And again to scrambling, my favourite. 🙂

The climb down required much more focus than the way in which up – the rocks have been a bit slippery so we did a whole lot of sliding on our butts and utilizing our arms to assist us. My arms have been undoubtedly sore the following day.

There have been some extra cool caves to hike/squeeze via, too!

After climbing all the way in which again down the Large Slide, it was again into the final little little bit of the hike within the woods.

Such a enjoyable method to spend a day.

If you end up in Acadia and revel in rock scrambling, I extremely advocate the Large Slide! It wouldn’t be nice for little children, and you’d undoubtedly not wish to do it with a child/toddler in a climbing backpack, however elementary faculty aged youngsters on I believe may deal with it high-quality.

I’ll be again with yet another Acadia recap subsequent week. Keep tuned, and thanks for following alongside on the adventures!
