Rinzai answered Ryuge’s query by saying, “Move me the cushion”, by which Rinzai confirmed the which means of the patriarch’s coming from the West. Ryuge was smart sufficient to recognise Rinzai’s intention. When he handed the cushion to Rinzai, his intention was to not hand the cushion however to disclose the true-Self, the which means of the patriarch’s coming from the West.
