Gary Varner, professor emeritus of philosophy at Texas A&M College, has died.

Professor Varner was identified for his work on environmental and animal ethics, in addition to of R. M. Hare’s two-level utilitarianism. His analysis contains quite a few articles and three books: Defending Biodiversity: Environmental Science and Ethics with Jonathan Newman and Stefan Linquist (Cambridge, 2017); Personhood, Ethics, and Animal Cognition: Situating Animals in the Two-Level Utilitarianism of R.M. Professor Varner joined the philosophy college at Texas A&M in 1990, and held visiting positions at Iowa State and Washington College in St. Louis. He earned his PhD from the College of Wisconsin, Madison, his MA from the College of Georgia, and his BA from Arizona State College.

He died on June twenty eighth, 2023, after havig suffered with most cancers. A colleague writes, “In accordance together with his needs, whereas no funeral or formal memorial service will probably be held, an off-the-cuff celebration of Dr. Varner’s life is tentatively deliberate for the Fall.
