Commentary:

Kingyu examined Rinzai by sitting down on the gate barring it together with his workers, by which he meant ‘Are you aware what I’m revealing via these actions to you?’ Rinzai, sensing his intention, responded by tapping the workers 3 times together with his hand, going into the monks’ corridor and sitting himself down within the first place. This implies, ‘I do know that you simply need to see if I’m conscious of the true-Self. The actions of my tapping your workers, going into the monks’ corridor and sitting down within the first place are the features of the true-Self’. Kingyu examined Rinzai once more with ‘When visitor and host meet, the same old courtesies are noticed. Elder, the place have you ever come from to be so unwell mannered?’. Rinzai’s response ‘What are you mumbling, outdated venerable?’ means ‘I’m not deceived by your phrases since I do know that you’re revealing the true-Self to see whether or not I can recognise it or not’. When Kingyu was about to open his mouth to disclose the true-Self by saying one thing, Rinzai, sensing his intention, hit him, by which he meant ‘I do know that you simply imply to point out me this’. In the long run, Kingyu performed a trick on Rinzai by pretending to fall down, however Rinzai, not being fooled by his trick, responded correctly by hitting him once more. Kingyu, realising that he couldn’t deceive Rinzai, permitted Rinzai’s enlightenment by observing, “It’s not my day right now.”
