Moments of poetry pierce through the mundane at a small-town grocery

A curiously compelling brief, From Fish to Moon chronicles the relatively unremarkable goings-on at a small grocery retailer within the city of Pahokee, Florida. Beginning the day early, an worker, Jean Voltaire, makes small speak with coworkers and regulars, fiddles round with an in-store slot machine and, within the quiet moments, reads the epic poem The Convention of the Birds (c1177) by the Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar. Subdued and contemplative, the US filmmaker Kevin Contento’s work appears to ask viewers to seek out poetry, as his topic does, in small moments and the unlikeliest of locations.
