Though it might need been written earlier it’s thought that James Francis Wade who was a copier of manuscripts wrote the verses and the music of this well-known hymn whereas residing on the Roman catholic School for Englishmen at Douai in France in about 1745.
They had been included in a packet of manuscripts despatched to the English Roman Catholic School in Lisbon in 1750 and located their strategy to England in 1785.
In 1841 Frederick Oakeley was the minister on the Margaret Chapel in London’s West Finish and gave this model, which he had translated from the Latin, to his congregation. It was recognized initially as ‘Adeste, fideles’ (Come Trustworthy Ones). In each variations it had eight verses and often the eighth is simply sung on Christmas Day.
