Dongshan advised the meeting on the finish of the summer season coaching interval, “When summer season ends and autumn begins, go straight to a spot the place there may be not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles.” Nobody within the meeting may reply. Later, a monastic advised Shishuang about it. Shishuang mentioned, “Why didn’t you say, ‘There’s grass in every single place one step exterior the gate’?”
Pupil: “The place is the place the place there may be not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles?”
Grasp: “Dongshan and Shishuang confirmed it.”
Pupil: “The place is it?”
Grasp: “It’s the place you are able to do nothing.”
Commentary:
The Buddha prefers doing nothing to doing an excellent factor.
