1st …….St David’s Day and the primary day of meteorological spring
Upon St David’s Day
Put oats and barley within the clay
Within the Roman calendar March,or Martius, was the primary month of a brand new yr. The month was named after Mars, the god of conflict and the guardian of agriculture. March was the month when each farming and warfare might start once more after winter. (There have all the time been wars ready to begin)
MARCH
I Martius am! As soon as first, and now the third!
To steer the yr was my appointed place;
A mortal dispossessed me by a phrase,
And set there Janus with the double face.
Therefore I make conflict on all of the human race;
I shake the cities with my hurricanes;
I flood the rivers and their banks efface,
And drown the farms and hamlets with my rains.
H.W. Longfellow. Within the Harbour, The Poets Calendar 1882
The Saxons known as it Hlydmonath which means loud month for the windy climate or Lentmonath or lengthening month, due to the equinox and lengthening of days and that is the origin of the phrase Lent. By the top of the month there will probably be two additional hours of daylight after which we’ll change clocks on the final day of March which can be Easter Sunday.
Dry days are treasured to get seeds sown……………..A peck of mud in March is price a king’s ransom.
