Flood of Reminiscence builds a bridge between the city of Independence, California in 1942, when some 10,000 Japanese Individuals have been incarcerated on the Manzanar internment camp, and 2023, when a tropical storm introduced a harmful flash meals to the area. In interviews, aged girls who have been imprisoned at Manzanar as youngsters describe their expertise of the camp. Whereas their recollections span from painful to impartial to, within the blissful ignorance of childhood, even fulfilling, there’s a shared sentiment that these reminiscences have pale – both deliberately buried or just corroded by time. Pairing their phrases with archival footage of the camp and trendy imagery of Independence within the wake of the storm, the US director Maya Castronovo builds a poignant connection between the erosions of panorama and reminiscence on this place.
