Lecturer Laura Yakas is the recipient of a 2022 James T. Neubacher Award Honorable Point out. The U-M Council for Incapacity Issues established the James T. Neubacher Award in 1990 as a memorial to Jim Neubacher, a U-M alum who was a columnist for The Detroit Free Press and an advocate for equal rights and alternatives for individuals with disabilities. By his advocacy, he sought to “elevate a bit consciousness” and “elevate a bit hell!” The award is offered yearly in October throughout Incapacity Group Month.
“I am particularly moved by the validating suggestions about my anti-saneism/incapacity justice work,” stated Yakas. “Anti-saneism is my ardour and goal on this planet, and it has traditionally been marginalized inside social work — so to be acknowledged and nominated explicitly for this by members of our SSW neighborhood feels wonderful!”
