Q. What is the meaning of “If someone, seeing the Buddha, is not attached to him, he is one who truly knows the Buddha” from the Avatamsaka Sutra?

A. The core of Buddhism is to not worship and pray to the Buddha for happiness, or fortune, however to understand that we’re none aside from the Buddha. Attempting to see another Buddha than ourselves is to be deluded by the picture of the Buddha, the phantasm of the Buddha.

This scripture tells us to not be deluded by the phantasm of the Buddha that is among the strongest obstacles stopping us from realising that we’re the Buddha. Because of this historic masters would say that we should always kill the Buddha if we see him.
