Commentary:

This half can sound deceptive to trendy folks as a result of it’s so exaggerated that it appears to be fictional. What issues is the way to grasp the which means this story conveys with out being deluded by phrases. ‘Fuke was begging one and all to offer him a Buddhist monk’s gown’ implies that he was revealing the true-Self in a peculiar solution to catch folks’s consideration as an expedient to unfold Zen Buddhism. For this reason he refused folks at any time when they, deluded by his phrases, provided him robes. Rinzai, conscious of Fuke’s intention, received a coffin ready for him.  Fuke, with the coffin on his shoulder, went again to the road market, calling loudly, “Rinzai received this gown made for me!” He meant that Rinzai had the attention of knowledge to see his intention. From ‘I’m going to the East Gate and can go away this world there’ to ‘till no one believed it any longer’ Fuke revealed the true-Self.  From ‘On the fourth day, and now with none spectators’ to ‘the folks from the road rushed there’ Fuke, conscious that his mission was over, revealed the true-Self lastly and dramatically. The final half from ‘On opening the coffin’ to the top of this story exhibits that though his bodily physique turned invisible, his existence because the true-Self is eternal. The sounds of raindrops and birds we are able to hear now are usually not totally different from the ringing of his hand bell.

The core of that is that no matter whether or not this story is actual or fictional, this all of the operate of the true-Self.
