Benjamin Ross Tilghman, professor emeritus of philosophy at Kansas State University, has died.

Professor Tilghman labored in philosophy of artwork and the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. He’s the writer of However is it Artwork? (1984), Wittgenstein, Ethics and Aesthetics (1991), An Introduction to the Philosophy of Faith (1993), The Expression of Emotion within the Visible Arts (2012), and Reflections on Aesthetic Judgment (2017), amongst different works.

Professor Tilghman joined the school of Kansas State in 1967, retiring in 1994, and served as division head there from 1967 to 1980. Earlier than that, he had taught on the College of Wyoming, Western State School of Colorado, and Reed School. He earned his PhD from the College of Washington and his BA and MA from Washington College in St. Louis.

His colleague, Jim Hamilton, writes:

Ben’s curiosity within the philosophy division and its college students at Kansas State College was eternal. He typically contributed to a fund for scholarships for college kids, known as the “Tilghman Excellence Fund,” arrange in Ben’s identify by a number of former college students.
